ohn H. White | Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photojournalist | Portrait by Cliff Mautner

There are photographers who make extraordinary images, and then there are photographers who inspire generations of others to see the world differently. John H. White is both.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, legendary educator, and one of the most respected voices in documentary photography, John has spent his life reminding us that photography is about much more than cameras and technique. It's about humanity, compassion, and the responsibility we have as visual storytellers.

I had the privilege of spending time with John during our 2026 Nikon Ambassador Summit. After 43 years of making photographs professionally, I don't often find myself hanging on someone's every word. But John has that effect on people.

He's remarkably soft-spoken, yet his words carry enormous weight.

As someone who began my career in photojournalism at The Philadelphia Inquirer, I have tremendous respect for photographers who understand the power of an image to inform, move, and inspire.

Making this portrait was a privilege. But listening to John, learning from him, and being reminded why I fell in love with photography in the first place was the real gift.
